Distance Covered:

I managed a short late pm session at Pevensey Bay ... VFW Mark had been on the blower telling me he was on his Syncro 103 & 6.5m and being Easterly there was some swell to play in too ....

Typical just as I get there the wind drops a little ... another fella had just rocked up too and he rigged his 6.0m and JP 120 Excite Ride. Decided to go 6.4m Remedy and 3S 97 but before even got the sail out of the van spotted Mark struggling to waterstart .... change of plan ... windy showed 14-18 knots at top of beach, but being easterly it's almost a case of knots = mph ... so ... 7.0m GTX & Manta 75 perhaps .... then Lee came back to switch to bigger board (140-145ish ltr Powerglide) so I decided to go for 8.5m in the end so could see how it handled powered up . Pieced it all together with the Manta 75 loaded up with the big 50cm Pro-Limit Freerace fin ... so oversize rig, over wide board and over sized fin ... time for a bucking bronco ride in the easterly swell ....

The GTX 8.5m was sweet as, never pulling out of control .... the fin was way too big so should have switched this, and the board was indeed a bit lively over the swell & chop, but not an unpleasant sail .... managed 20 knots max on the navman gps which was disappointing, but given there was no flat water I guess it was okay, but compared to a light wind session on the saturday where I managed 20 knots on the same kit in no more than 11 knots I was hoping to sqeeze more speed, and probably would have had i switched to a smaller fin.

An unexpected sail, so happy with that, even if i would have prefered it to be 6.4m & 3S-97 action ....
